Why Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree FEELS more Difficult than it Really is
The release of Elden Rings highly anticipated (and GOTY contender) DLC has been met with many conversations saying it's too difficult or hard, and sparking an age old conversation again. This time, it has some more interesting reasons for happening though, that takes into account most of the Souls-likes before it. With a mad dash of complaints and builds to counter the difficulty and viral clips of streamers playthroughs, along with the controversy of larger creators such as Asmongold and Penguinz0, I wanted to talk at length as to the reasons that it's difficulty is a matter of perception when perception is two thirds of reality.

    I didnt find the last boss harder than Isshin Ashina from sekiro. I think most people who got stuck on bosses were very underleveled or wouldnt use summons

    I think you hit the nail on the head with us feeling more of a relief instead of a sense of accomplishment. I really dislike the attack chains into one another, even from "standard" enemies. Let me hit you, give me time to heal (preferably without input reading the flask animation), and give me time to summon... else why put the spirits in the game...? A side note: you are using a new weapon and ash in the video, which afaik are a bit busted atm, which kinda contradicts your point of them not being better ^^

    I just reall dislike how rise seems to have been made for adhd kids who can't keep their attention on something for more than a minute Everything is fast and i'm not talking about monsters, i'm talking about grinding materials, money and ressources In other mh game, just finding malachite was something, now the game throws EVERYTHING at you, to the point where i never had to farm for anything and still have way too much of everything Same thing to get around the map, now everything can be solved with wallrunning and wirebugs World was the peak of monster hunter

    I were the devs, I'd introduce "scadu runes" in the DLC. Basically another currency that let's you level up in the DLC area. Effectively this does the same thing as Scadutree fragments. But chances how people approach the game. Instead of running around to find scadutree fragment, player can go to an optional dungeon kill the enemies/bosses and get stronger as result of that. In other words, this DLC tied progression directly to exploration. In the base game progression tied to combat. That's the biggest flaw I'd say. In the base game where ever you go, you'll find enemies and beating those enemies you can level up and get stronger. In the DLC, you can beat all the enemies in the area but get nothing out of it. This lessens the core game loop of Souls games. You know beat those incredibly strong enemies and get basically nothing. This feels cheap.

    I really like this video! You have a very good way with words. Just finished the dlc yesterday and I really enjoyed everything except for about maybe 60% of the bosses. The boss fights are my favorite parts of From’s titles. Sometimes in the DLC it felt like in those 1 or 2 seconds I have to attack in between dodging, I’d have time to get in one extra attack while the boss was still recovering from their missed attack, only the second I would tap the attack button the boss would speed up or instantly start up another attack to punish me for observing / thinki by it was safe to attack. I didn’t like that feeling all that much lol.

    I think the smithing stones and stuff are for challenge runs after seing iron pineapple go in with nothing at level 1. If you didnt get these upgrades you couldnt run the dlc without the base game. The challenge run scene is huge in Eldenring.

    Super late game damage scaling is a hell of a drug. Tweaking a few percentage points with the skibidi fragments is the difference between getting 2 shot or 4 shot.

    I think people thinks it’s to hard because everyone is rusty. I know I was rusty for the first and the first 15 hours I was trying to relearn the game because I haven’t played it in a year. Once I got back into the grove I started playing better. I am still getting my butt kicked but I am starting to win more.

    I would have been perfectly fine with the dlc being at the same level of difficulty as the Haligtree. I don't like exploring every inch of the map after my first playthrough and this leveling system is making me not want to play the dlc again.

    oh boy you missed a hero shooter that is in alpa state now that is based on furries😂😂 I forgot the name of that game. And yeah I think people who give a negative energy to the upcoming new Valve game is just salty, I think they are die hard fans of TF2 who is butthurt because of the state of their main game rn. But the thing is and obvious at this point that Valve won't release new games if their is no new innovations to it. They proved this when they released HL Alyx VR game instead of HL3. And I'm also excited about Deadlock my anticipated Smite killer game from them.

    I actually disagree with the DLC being openly designed for late game and the land of shadow's loot scattered about being useless; While yes the enemies are remarkably strong... I made a new character for the DLC, and had just barely beaten only Radhan, Mogh and Godrick. I only had one plus twelve weapon, and every single loot drop i got was useful for me on that character. The lower level stones aided me in upgrading new dlc weaoons i found, the massive rune gains helped me keep pace woth the DLC, and i never found myself outclassed at all and had the DLC beaten by the time i had reqched 70 hours on the character. The entire experience was really engaging and rewarding! Plus.. to be honest, even if we replaced every material and stone with 9s and 10s, it *still* wouldn't be useful for an already completed character. Unless youre obssessed with getting every single weapon maxed out like i am on my main character, pretty much every slab will be useless since why would you neer any more than you get in the base game?

    I love how asmongold always claims he doesn't cheese bosses. But when they design bosses that punish players for mindlessly spamming jump attacks, he claims it's to hard to be fun. Then comes back with a different build that can cheese the new design. The down time is a legitimate complaint though. The beast clergynan was my least favorite endgame boss in the base game.

    You spend 12 minutes of the video explaining that the DLC didn't invalidate the base game by completing power creeping everything the base game overs. Sounds like you don't understand good game design. I should not be punished for bringing in a good weapon from the base game into the dlc, and be FORCED to switch out of it. DLCs have always just brought more of the same tools, and there are legit hundreds of new weapons/talismans/spells/armor sets combined to create tons of new builds. Are they all better? No, but if they were then the DLC would legit be the ONLY content worth playing through. Also all these ''caveats'' you put in can be applied to the base game. Someone can find the best weapon/talisman combo in the first 30 minutes of the game and invalidate ALL progression of base game too. Smh ppl think they can make a 50 minute video and try to sound smart, and they think they are actually smart lol. Also one of your ''solutions'' would be to add more weapon levels/etc as progression and rebalance NG+ based on that... are you out of your mind? I played this DLC on NG+5, what was I supposed to do with your proposed solution? Delete my save file and start over? The DLC doesn't need a solution, ppl need to stop being crybabies. There are ppl with 17-18 blessings still dying to radahn for 8-20 hours. That's not an exploration issue, the bosses are just harder.

    When Elden Ring first came out, I spent like an hour riding around Liurnia trying to find a way up to the Moonlight Altar area. I gave up and got there in the end through a quest. It wasn't an experience I particularly enjoyed to be honest, and the entire SotE map is basically this. Like I wanted to go find map fragments before exploring more, but over and over again every time I found a new area that I thought might finally have a path to the map fragment, it wasn't. I ended up looking up how to find them because I got so sick of it. The ONE time I felt like it was ok I still couldn't get to it was when I stumbled across St Trina's area. Other than that, I never found anything that made me glad I'd at least taken the journey, I just felt like I'd wasted more time. But once I checked out the guides and opened up the world, I started having a lot more fun riding around and finding stuff. I really hated the way the game was sort of playing 'keep away' with the map fragments, but aside from that I had a good experience with it. Exploration is kind of a one time thing, and wasn't my favourite part of the base game, so it's not a huge deal if the dlc fumbles in that area. But man did it fumble

    Issues I believe need to be addressed. 1. Some bosses instantly use their best special attack moments after entering the arena. All bosses should walk at you like a cool guy for at least 5 seconds and then engage with the player. This will allow the fights to take place more in the center of the arena as well as make the fight more interesting so its not just dodge X attack at the start which is not that engaging. 2. Move summon signs and spirit ash locations to outside the boss arenas. Some are inside and some are outside, bringing this to parity will remove the frustration of trying to activate summon signs while fighting for your life. 3. Certain boss strings frame data should be adjusted slightly to allow more lenience with dodge rolling. There are a few strings that will roll catch if you don't hit a very tight timing and that does feel unfair and frustrating to engage with. Elden Ring already felt like a game where you can choose too suffer or you can choose to abuse the game right back with a myriad of broken builds. But the DLC takes it to the extreme. You will abuse the game or the game will abuse you and I have mixed feeling about that. Learning a difficult encounter is allowed to be frustrating but it should also keep the player engaged. Finding the next step forward should be enjoyable and motivating but I felt my progress on a select few bosses, more then any other souls-like, being impeded by unnecessary bullshittery.

    Another thing I dislike is the myth that spellcasters could just summon and stand in a corner with the base game bosses,while i felt this was true for the “bosses” that were just superpowered regular enemies,every story boss had aoe attacks and could attack you from range meaning you still had to learn to dodge even as a spellcaster at times i had to be in melee range casting short range spells to win so the way the dlc has been overtuned just feels like elden ring is tryna outdo a problem that melee users made up to feel better about their builds.

    My problem with the “rocket boots analogy” is if fromsoft was this master in difficult game design we keep praising them for,there should be no rocket boots,everything in the game should be made to tackle the challenges they are creating,when they put a “rocket boots” mechanic in the game when you also said players should use every mechanic in a game that seems backwards to me.

    I feel like people are getting that same knee-jerk reaction to the "difficulty" like they did back in the initial Sekiro days/months. The expectations on how to deal with the problems in front of them have changed, and they're having difficulty adjusting. (Like having a console player play the same game with a keyboard and mouse) Which clearly makes everything seem much more difficult than it actually is. Does the game/DLC have its problems? Yeah. But with how extreme people have gotten , all devolopers and consumers can do is take it with a grain of salt.

    I would say exploration was the most rewarding part. Mostly because of scudletree stuff hidden all over the place. Reason why smithing stones are useless is because farming souls is too easy. If it was not ash of war vs albinaurics easy - those would still be really valuable

    First starters I want a profit by saying I play several other games with somewhat similar combat to really Souls like games in general but that function completely differently ultimately from things like Black Desert online to especially one of my most favorite games being Naraka Bladepoint. Another reason I bring a special those two games in particular up is because both of their essentially plays on the souls like style simple weapons with simple weapon attacks and set combo chains with naraka most of all being pretty similar but both still being drastically different because of two major things being better weapon animations in general that are unique to each individual weapon with entirely different ways the hitboxes move and how the movie sets are capable of even functioning even if it is still just technically three inputs you have and far better Mobility for the player. the thing that held back even base game Elden ring if you asked me from being able to ever be called my absolute favorite game of all time what is the fact that they reuse the same weapon attack animations and really just all player animations they have ever used since Demon Souls and they just keep doing it over and over again

I believe this is the actual core root of the problem when you consider how the bosses mobility and movement and attack strings and animations are now Immaculate and amazing and it feels like they were trying to do their best to improve the fluidity and combat of the bosses but they forgot that that needs to be a two-way street otherwise the player gets left in the dust and the combat stagnates with sekiro being the ultimate example of why you need to raise both of the players abilities and the bosses abilities in the same way in regards to weapon animations and movesets... I hope in the next game they decide to not reuse the weapon animations and that the leak we have I want to say it was like a year after Elden Rings release or maybe even just a few months after it about that 4chan leak saying there was a new game that was codenamed spellblade where it would be a open world game with essentially one massive Legacy dungeon at the center of a circular open world with that Legacy dungeon being a massive City and where most importantly, there wouldn't actually be any spells in the game technically but instead there would be actual spells that are equipped in the weapon slot and essentially attack as if they were a weapon what's the standard light and heavy combo chains with each attack in that chain being a different spell cast or a different use of that spell. I really hope this is a sign especially if this is perhaps one of the projects being Guided by a new director Miyazaki had mentioned recently that shows that maybe just maybe, they're finally moving away from the old way of doing spell casting and really all player-related combat and finally understand why it's so outdated and needs to be updated and changed

    In terms of exploring, I'd argue that putting items around that are less value and not as exciting makes it all the better in the Long run, yes you might not be excited about them as much, but you still need them to upgrade your weapon all the same, so any you find will make it cheaper for you. And additionally, it enabled you to skip running around the open world for hours, remembering every good drop in NG+ runs or new characters because at that point you know what's where and what you want to get, imagine having to explore every area in detail, every single playthrough

    I love elden ring and the dlc, but I feel fromsoft has gone overboard on their boss designs. They are on Crack and leave you with little to no room to breathe. If you don't play perfect or damn near perfect, you are sol. I wish they'd take remnant 2s boss approach. The ceo said that if the dev who designed a boss couldn't beat it without taking damage, then they needed to rebalance the boss. Still love the game, but god damn, the bosses in this game just feel poorly designed. I don't feel satisfied when I beat them, I'm just glad it's over and have no interest in fighting them again. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I feel like we need bloodbourne like character movement to properly match these spastic boss movements.

    The root cause is capitalism. Its a naive idea to hope that any company that exists within capitalism has the option not to choose greed. Greed IS capitalism. The indie teams will grow amd the cycle will begin again. Thats fact. Unless we change the economic system that companies are forced to comply with. Remove the profit motive entirely and art and creativity will flourish. Its not hyperbolic to say that our society is in a state of decay. The current economic system reached its peak potential decades, if not centuries ago and now everything that it was supposed to improve is now stagnating or going in reverse. Prosperity, equality, human rights, civil rights, wars, quality of life, security, stability, and culture. Video games is part of culture. The fact that everything is a remake or the 20th sequel is exactly what im talking about. Culture has stagnated. When companies compete in a capitalist system the winner (sony) absorbs the loser (xbox) and their only concern is higher profits, obviously. Consumer demand is irrelevant to them. This WILL get worse. One thing I want to make clear is the gaming industry isnt collapsing. Its in decay. When its in collapse.... youll know. There will be no doubt. When its in collapse games will stop being released both AAA and indie. Almost every gaming studio will close. Servers for every studio will get shut down. THAT is collapse. The gaming industry basically ceasing to exist. The only way that will happen is when (yes, when) we enter into a global economic crisis like the second great depression. Sounds apocolyptic, i know. But its true. We have hundreds of years of history and a scientific understanding on economic and geo political forces to know whats coming. The only answer is a revolution of the working class and the youth. The ruling class and the economic system they uphold will destroy everything you love. Everything.

    Just my two cents about alot of the enemies spamming attacks. Each attack is a chance to parry and it gets easier as the combos become more predictable. I parried my way through alot of the content and even some bosses instead of waiting to attack, i just used their attack to create my own chance to do so.

    Your entire video made me see that most of the players that played Elden Ring DLC were people who played it casually, there is no problem about it, but the DLC was designed differently, you just need to explore a bit and learn from the community like any FROM game, it gives you more challenge than the base game, and it is AWESOME because you can easily access almost everything in base game without killing a boss, the DLC added challenge and people complained about, all the points in this video looks like its from a vision from someone who NEVER played a Fromsoftware game before and wants it to align to the majority of formulas from others AAA games, I am not an elitist player or a pro player, but when I see streamers complaining about difficulty or dying more than 10, 20, even 100 deaths in a boss, I start to think that those people might have a cognitive problem and cannot learn patterns, and somehow they always finish the game with the most boring or cheese way to win, that just proves that this game might not be for them, and crying about it online is just pathetic.

    i like both tbh, each has their pros and cons. then thing with rise its that its geared towards a more japanese audience, and is also made to be played a lot faster due to the portable nature of the switch.

      Yeah, same. Even with 20 blessings (roughly 60% defense in all elements) I still get two-three shot, sometimes even one-shot, and I'm also level 568, with 99 vigor to boot. I'm not exactly upset though, as I could just use shields, but I wanna get good, and this is how I get good.

    Git gud 💀 Fantastic video 10/10 great work. Final boss specifically 1st phase was awesome and a lot of fun but that second phase almost completely soured the entire dlc for me to the point where I am never going to waste my time fighting that again. This was my first souls game and I played the entire base game over and over again and enjoyed all the time i spent fighting those bosses again and again, and I plan on doing that again with the dlc. But that dude? Nahh i'm good. Its honestly crazy to me and a little disappointing how much fun I was having with the dlc up until the final boss. Oh well, I'm never going to fight him again so I guess I can just enjoy everything else.

    Its really hard compared to the main game, much more, but I'm still trying over and over again and succeeding. So far I'm enjoying it.
